Are you ready to Transform to an exalted Reputation?
It is human to resist change. Every company will have a constituency or many, in fact, who will be cynical about any developmental effort if it involves change. Former IBM Chief Lou Gerstner once wrote: “Culture isn’t one aspect of the game__it is THE game!”
When you embark on a Reputation Management initiative, remember, you are actually working on changing the culture of your team / organization. And that’s no mean task.
Where do you begin? And what must you focus on?
Here are nine steps to transforming your Reputation. Read through them more than once. Mentally map your organization’s / team’s level of preparedness for this arduous yet worthwhile journey.
# 1. Evolve a Reputation Goal
- Define “What do you want to be seen as?”
- Assess what companies are doing globally and learn from other Global examples
# 2. Form a powerful guiding coalition
- Assemble your A-Team and empower them to lead the change effort
- Encourage the group to get together to soar higher
# 3. Fortify the Vision
- Re-visit the Vision to help direct the change effort
- Developing strategies for achieving the Vision
# 4. Communicate the Vision
- Use every vehicle possible to communicate the new Vision and strategies
- Teach new behaviors by the example of the guiding coalition
# 5. Empower others to act on the Vision
- Get rid of obstacles to the change
- Change systems or structures that seriously undermine the Vision
- Encourage risk-taking, non-traditional ideas, activities and actions
- Ensure and Enable Execution Excellence; Prevent and Prohibit all else
# 6. Planning for and creating short-term wins
- Plan for visible performance improvements
- Create platforms to showcase Value Behaviors
- Recognize and reward employees involved in the improvements
# 7. Consolidating improvements and producing still more change
- Use increased credibility to change systems, structures, policies that don’t fit the Vision
- Hire, promote and develop employees who can implement the vision
- Re-energize the process with new projects, themes and change agents
# 8. Institutionalizing new approaches
- Articulate the connections between the new behaviors and corporate success
- Develop the means to ensure leadership development and succession
# 9. You own the outcome
- Remember: the buck starts and ends with you!
So, Reputation Management is not for the weak-hearted. If you are Captain Courageous, dear CEO, go for it. Create a lasting, enduring Reputation for your organization for the world to cherish, long after you have vacated the Corner Office. To be sure, true fame comes from immortality.
